Things to see and do

Staithes has so much to offer.

If you have young children, chances are you’ll recognise beautiful Staithes. It’s the location for the much-loved CBBC series Old Jack’s Boat, starring Bernard Cribbins as Old Jack and, of course, Salty the dog.

The young James (later Captain) Cook had his first job here (as an apprentice grocer, oddly, not a seaman), and the cobbles, alleys and cottages are pretty much as they were in the 18th century.

They still do a spot of fishing here – and you can take a boat out with Sean Baxter of Real Staithes to do just that, fishing for mackerel or lobsters and then cooking them up on the beach, or beach-combing along the foreshore and foraging for materials to make your own paint according to an ancient method.

Historically Staithes has also been a bit of a magnet for artists – sort of a northern St Ives, which is celebrated in early September with the annual Staithes Festival of Arts & Heritage. Scores of cottages and public buildings will throw open their doors to the public as pop-up galleries will be selling work by local and visiting artists, including painters, ceramicists, jewellery makers, sculptors and photographers. The craft centre on Church Street in the village is a good place to browse the local arts and craft stalls created by locals and visiting artists.

Staithes has a working lifeboat station, and it is fascinating to watch the inshore lifeboat being taken out of its store for practices.

There are still many fossils to be found on the flat rocks near the cliffs at low tide. However, beware of falling debris and watch the incoming tides!

All pubs and cafes in Staithes are dog friendly so there will never be the need to leave a furry friend alone in the cottage!
